{"id":730,"date":"2011-06-29T20:34:35","date_gmt":"2011-06-29T20:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/writersroom.ca\/socrates\/?p=730"},"modified":"2014-12-08T13:58:08","modified_gmt":"2014-12-08T21:58:08","slug":"lessons-in-sound-lesson-4-editing-sound-effects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writersroom.ca\/socrates\/2011\/06\/29\/lessons-in-sound-lesson-4-editing-sound-effects\/","title":{"rendered":"Lessons in Sound \u2013 Lesson 4: Editing Sound Effects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I record sound effects, rather than creating multiple takes for a single sound source (ie, hitting a pizza pan), I tend to continue the recording and try multiple permutations of sound levels, microphone distances and, in the case of something like a pizza pan, velocities.\u00a0 By recording these permutations in one track you save yourself time by not having to continuously start and stop your recording unit.\u00a0 The downfall of this method is the copious amount of time required to cut these continuous recordings into useable sections.<\/p>\n<p>This is where editing software like pro-tools comes in handy.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-tools has a useful tool which finds transients.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikiaudio.org\/Transient\">Transient<\/a> is defined as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;. . .a short-duration signal that represents a non-harmonic  attack phase of a musical sound or spoken word. It contains a high  degree of non-periodic components and a higher magnitude of high  frequencies than the harmonic content of that sound.
